UAE Braces for Unsettled Weather as Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Hit

Thu, Aug 27, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Parts of the UAE are currently experiencing a shift in weather patterns, with heavy rainfall and strong winds sweeping across several regions. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued yellow alerts for eastern and southern areas, warning residents to exercise caution during the transition period between summer and autumn. Reports indicate that significant cloud formation, driven by moist winds over the Hajar Mountains, has led to intense thunderstorms in places like Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah. In response to the unstable conditions, authorities in Abu Dhabi have taken precautionary steps, including the temporary closure of public parks, beaches, and recreational facilities to ensure the safety of the community.

This unusual summer rainfall is being fueled by an influx of moisture from the Sea of Oman, which, when combined with high temperatures and eastern pressure systems, creates convective clouds. While temperatures soared as high as 49.7°C in parts of the country today, relief may be on the horizon with the upcoming appearance of the Suhail star on August 24. This celestial event traditionally marks the beginning of the "Sufriya" phase, a 40-day transition leading toward milder, cooler weather. Until then, officials continue to urge motorists to drive carefully and follow posted speed limits as the country navigates this active weather cycle.
