UAE’s Nepalese Community Grapples with Anxiety Following Devastating Flash Floods

Thu, Aug 27, 2026(1h ago)UAE

The Nepalese community in the UAE is currently facing a period of profound distress as catastrophic flash floods and landslides devastate their homeland near the Nepal-Tibet border. Dubai resident Poornima described a sleepless night spent tracking the disaster, noting that while her relatives in Chitwan were able to evacuate, the sheer scale of the destruction is unprecedented. With reports of multi-story buildings and bridges crumbling under the force of the water, many expats find themselves glued to social media, desperately trying to contact loved ones amidst failing internet connections and the grim reality of the ongoing search for over 1,000 missing individuals.

For others, the disaster has brought personal upheaval and heartbreaking dilemmas. Lakshmi Thapa shared the story of neighbors forced to make impossible choices, such as leaving elderly family members behind during desperate evacuations, while Kalpana Khati revealed that her husband is currently stranded in Nepal, forced to reroute his return to the UAE via Delhi after roads to Kathmandu were washed away. As the community continues to check in on one another, there is a collective sense of shock and helplessness, with many fearing that it will take weeks to fully comprehend the tragic impact of what is being described as the worst flooding the region has ever seen.
