UAE Introduces Flexible Work Hours for Parents During Back-to-School Season
To ease the transition as children return to the classroom, the UAE government has implemented a flexible work policy for its public sector employees. Starting Monday, August 31, staff members with children in primary school or higher are permitted to adjust their start and end times by up to three hours on the first day of school. Recognizing that different academic calendars have varying start dates, the policy offers leeway to accommodate the specific schedules of diverse curricula across the country.
Beyond the initial school day, the initiative provides further support for parents with younger children, allowing those with kids in nurseries or kindergarten to utilize flexible hours throughout the entire first week of their term. Furthermore, the policy extends to essential school-related events, enabling employees to request modified shifts for parent-teacher conferences, graduation ceremonies, and other significant academic activities. This ongoing initiative, which has been in place since 2024, aims to balance the professional responsibilities of government staff with their family commitments, all while ensuring that public service delivery remains efficient and uninterrupted.
