Abu Dhabi Extends Fixed-Gear Fishing Season Through 2026
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has officially announced an extension for the fixed-gear fishing season, which will now run until October 31, 2026. This decision follows encouraging data showing a rebound in regional fish populations, signaling that recent conservation efforts are proving effective. The extension directly benefits over 40 licensed local fishermen who utilize stationary equipment, such as anchored or staked gear, to harvest fish along the emirate’s expansive coastline and islands.
This initiative is a cornerstone of "The World’s Richest Seas" program, which seeks to balance marine environmental restoration with the economic needs of the local fishing community. According to the EAD, the updated season timeline was finalized after extensive scientific research and collaborative discussions with the Abu Dhabi Fishermen’s Cooperative Society. By providing this extension, the agency aims to support the livelihoods of fishing families while ensuring that the region's marine biodiversity remains sustainable for generations to come.
