6 Key Changes Coming to the UAE Starting June 1

Fri, May 22, 2026(91d ago)UAE

Starting June 1, residents across the UAE will experience several significant shifts that impact everything from legal rights to daily travel expenses. One of the most notable updates is the reduction of the legal age of majority from 21 lunar years to 18 Gregorian years. This change grants young adults the autonomy to manage assets, enter contracts, and make independent legal decisions. Furthermore, the private sector will see a stricter Wage Protection System, mandating that companies pay employee salaries by the first of each month to avoid being flagged for payment delays.

In terms of cost and convenience, motorists should prepare for price adjustments. Both Dubai’s Parkin and Salik are introducing a 5 per cent VAT on their services, which covers everything from toll fees and parking permits to tag activation. Additionally, Dubai is moving toward a cashless parking system; starting June 1, physical cash payments at meters will be phased out, pushing drivers to utilize the Parkin app, Nol cards, or the RTA app for their transactions. Finally, the Alhind Group is gearing up to launch 16 new centers across the country by mid-June, specifically designed to streamline consular, passport, and visa services for Indian nationals.
