Commuters traveling between Sharjah and Dubai can look forward to significantly shorter travel times as the first phase of the Al Taawun Tunnel project nears completion. By creating a 500-metre underground bypass beneath the existing roundabout, the project aims to facilitate a direct route between Al Taawun Street and Al Nahda Bridge. Once the initial phase opens in November 2026, motorists will be able to skip the busy surface-level junctions, with experts anticipating an impressive 85 per cent reduction in typical waiting times. The full project, which will also improve links to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street and Emirates Road, is scheduled for a final handover in early 2027.

To ensure the infrastructure can handle high volumes, the new signalised intersection will be capable of processing 4,200 vehicles per hour in each direction. While the construction necessitated the temporary removal of the landmark Al Taawun Roundabout monument, officials have confirmed that it will be carefully restored to its original site once the works are complete. This tunnel is part of a broader, ongoing effort by Sharjah to modernize its road network, joining other significant upgrades such as the expansion of Emirates Road and the new overpass at the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street-Maliha Street intersection, all designed to streamline regional travel as the population grows.
