Sharjah to Open Initial Phase of Al Taawun Tunnel Ahead of Major Book Fair

Wed, Sep 2, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Sharjah is set to unveil the first phase of the Al Taawun tunnel project just in time for the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair this November. This impressive 500-metre tunnel, which sits beneath the Al Taawun Roundabout, features three lanes in each direction to streamline travel between Al Taawun Street, Al Nahda Bridge, and Dubai. Beyond the tunnel itself, a new signalised intersection has been constructed to manage high traffic volumes of up to 4,200 vehicles per hour, significantly easing congestion and improving access to the Expo Centre Sharjah. Once fully operational by February 2027, the project is projected to slash traffic wait times by an impressive 85 per cent.

As part of this major infrastructure development, the iconic monument at the Al Taawun Roundabout has been temporarily removed, with plans to restore a redesigned version to its original spot upon completion. This project serves as a crucial upgrade to one of Sharjah’s busiest corridors, and it is expected to integrate seamlessly into a future transport route connecting to Al Noor Road. Meanwhile, the city is aggressively pursuing other transport improvements, including a Dh140 million overpass project at the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street-Maliha Street intersection, which aims to cut commute times in half for motorists traveling toward central Sharjah. Alongside these road expansions, local authorities are also prioritizing pedestrian safety with the installation of new crossings and enhanced traffic signals across key urban areas like Corniche Street and Port Street.
