Sumo Wrestlers Bring Ancient Japanese Tradition to Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is set to make history this month as it hosts its first-ever international professional sumo tournament at the Space42 Arena. Organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism â Abu Dhabi, this landmark event brings the storied heritage of Japanâs national sport to the UAE. The competition will feature nine elite wrestlers from Japan, Mongolia, and Egypt, including prestigious Emperorâs Cup winners and world champions, who will go head-to-head in 36 high-stakes bouts.
Beyond the raw intensity of the wrestling, the event offers a cultural immersion into the centuries-old rituals that define the sport. Attendees will witness the formal ring-entering processions and traditional pre-bout preparations that emphasize the deep respect and history surrounding the dohyo. By bridging the gap between professional sports and cultural heritage, this competition provides a rare, up-close look at a discipline that has rarely been showcased in the region, marking a significant milestone for Abu Dhabi's diverse sporting calendar.
