Surge in UAE Cyberattacks Targets Smart Home Devices and Critical Infrastructure

Thu, Sep 3, 2026(59m ago)UAE

The UAE is currently facing a significant escalation in cyber threats, with daily attack volumes climbing from roughly 300,000 to over 800,000 during recent regional tensions. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, highlighted at the FutureSec conference that attackers are increasingly weaponizing Internet of Things (IoT) devices—including smart home gadgets, CCTV cameras, and even dashboard systems in autonomous vehicles—to spread terror. These incidents demonstrate a shift toward destructive warfare, as hackers increasingly deploy "wiper" malware to permanently erase critical data rather than merely holding it for ransom.

Beyond consumer tech, these sophisticated campaigns are aggressively targeting the nation’s essential infrastructure, including the water, energy, and healthcare sectors. Al Kuwaiti noted that artificial intelligence has become a core component of these attacks, fueling advanced phishing, impersonation, and disinformation campaigns. In response, the UAE is bolstering its national defense by expanding its globally recognized cybersecurity framework and aggressively migrating critical systems to post-quantum-secure technologies. Emphasizing that public awareness is the nation’s most vital line of defense, officials continue to advocate for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to counter this persistent digital threat.
