UAE Sets New Federal Standards for Autonomous Vehicles

Thu, Sep 3, 2026(2h ago)UAE

The UAE has officially greenlit a comprehensive federal law designed to regulate the integration of self-driving vehicles across the country. Spearheaded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this new legislative framework establishes clear guidelines for the inspection, licensing, and registration of autonomous cars, while defining the distinct responsibilities for operators, manufacturers, and passengers. By creating a unified set of standards across all seven emirates, the government aims to foster technological innovation while prioritizing environmental sustainability, reducing traffic congestion, and significantly enhancing road safety.

This move builds upon existing momentum in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which have already begun pioneering their own autonomous transport initiatives. Dubai, for instance, is pushing toward an ambitious goal of having 25% of all transport trips be driverless by 2030, supported by recent taxi fleet launches and partnerships with companies like Uber to integrate driverless options into daily commutes. Similarly, Abu Dhabi has introduced specialized blue license plates to help officials monitor these vehicles. With this federal mandate, the nation is solidifying its position as a global leader in smart mobility, ensuring that the rollout of future transport technology remains safe, consistent, and forward-thinking.
