Abu Dhabi Court Orders Repayment of Dh120,000 Loan and Compensation

Sat, Sep 5, 2026(2h ago)UAE

An Abu Dhabi court has ruled in favor of a lender, ordering a borrower to pay back a Dh120,000 loan along with an additional Dh15,000 in compensation. The dispute began when the lender provided the funds in two separate transactions to assist the man during an emergency. While the borrower initially acknowledged the debt and promised repayment via WhatsApp, he eventually stopped responding to the lender's attempts to recover the money, leading the lender to initiate civil proceedings.

During the trial, the borrower admitted to receiving the full amount but argued that there was no set deadline for repayment, citing his own ongoing financial hardships as the reason for the delay. He requested that the court waive the additional compensation charges. However, the court dismissed these arguments, citing bank transfer receipts and the text message history as clear evidence of the debt. Ultimately, the judges concluded that the borrower had no legal basis to retain the funds and that his failure to pay had caused the lender significant financial and emotional distress.
