Abu Dhabi Police Release Dashcam Footage of Dangerous Highway Pile-up
Abu Dhabi Police recently shared alarming dashcam footage to highlight the severe dangers of stopping in the middle of a highway. The video captures a white sedan colliding with a pickup truck, causing the latter to overturn and create a hazardous obstruction. The situation worsened when other motorists stopped their cars in the travel lanes, leading to further chain-reaction collisions and more vehicles flipping over. Authorities are using this incident to emphasize that remaining in the flow of traffic after a minor accident, or stopping to rubberneck at a scene, puts every road user at significant risk.
To curb these life-threatening habits, UAE officials are doubling down on strict traffic regulations. Drivers involved in breakdowns or minor accidents are urged to reach the nearest exit or a safe shoulder immediately, or call 999 if their vehicle is immobile. Engaging in "rubbernecking" or blocking traffic without a valid reason can lead to hefty fines of Dh1,000 and black points. With penalties for reckless driving now reaching as high as Dh50,000 in some emirates, the message is clear: maintaining focus, avoiding distractions, and clearing the road promptly are essential duties for every driver to ensure safety on the highway.
