UAE’s High-Tech Approach to Saving Marine Ecosystems

Tue, Sep 8, 2026(1h ago)UAE

The UAE is aggressively integrating cutting-edge "blue technology"—including artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and satellite monitoring—to safeguard its marine biodiversity. During a recent summit hosted by the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, officials emphasized that environmental conservation is no longer viewed as separate from economic progress. Instead, the nation is weaving sustainability into its long-term development strategy. Hiba Alshehhi, from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, noted that the country has already achieved 98 percent protection of its critical biodiversity zones, with new efforts now targeting coral reef restoration and the enforcement of stricter anti-smuggling measures to curb wildlife trafficking.

While AI serves as a powerful tool for monitoring and disaster mapping, experts like Anuradha Bhattacharya, MENA Oceans Director, warn that these solutions must be specifically tailored to the unique conditions of the Gulf. Simply importing global tech is insufficient, as local reefs and ecosystems require specialized training for robotics and sensors to function effectively. To bridge this gap, the region is now prioritizing collaborative projects that align government policy with private sector innovation. This ongoing research aims to foster a sustainable "blue economy," ensuring that vital sectors such as desalination, shipping, and coastal tourism can thrive without compromising the health of the ocean.
