Why the UAE’s Resilient Marine Life is Reaching a Breaking Point
The UAE’s coastal waters serve as a unique natural laboratory, housing some of the most heat-resistant marine life on the planet. According to Professor John A. Burt of NYU Abu Dhabi, these ecosystems—including 4 percent of the world’s seagrass—provide critical insights into how marine organisms adapt to extreme temperatures. While these species have evolved to survive in one of the hottest environments globally, experts warn that this resilience is not synonymous with immunity to climate change. Historical data, such as the catastrophic coral bleaching event of 2017, proves that even the most robust systems hit a threshold when temperatures exceed normal maximums, leading to significant die-offs and long-term health deterioration.
Beyond the immediate loss of coral reefs, rising temperatures are impacting fish populations and regional food security. Research indicates that heat stress forces fish to remain smaller, which drastically reduces their reproductive capacity and, consequently, the sustainability of local fishing grounds. These biological challenges are further compounded by emerging environmental threats, such as the expansion of an oxygen-depleted "minimum zone" in the central Gulf.
