GCC citizens can soon look forward to more streamlined travel and easier relocation between member states thanks to a new suite of integrated policies. During the Security and History Dialogue 2026 in Riyadh, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi announced significant enhancements, including mutual driving licence recognition, dedicated border lanes, and interconnected security systems. These initiatives are designed to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, allowing citizens to move more freely and efficiently across the Gulf region.

For those moving between countries, the mutual recognition of driving licences is a major breakthrough, eliminating the need to undergo repetitive testing when relocating. Instead, citizens can simply swap their existing licence for a local one. Complementing this, land border crossings are being upgraded with dedicated lanes to speed up transit, building upon the existing ability to travel using only a national ID. Furthermore, the electronic synchronization of security databases—including traffic violation records—ensures a unified approach to safety, marking a major milestone in the bloc’s shift toward shared, digitally-integrated public services.
