Dubai Sets New Course for AI and Tech Integration in Classrooms
The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai is currently developing a comprehensive policy framework to better manage the integration of artificial intelligence and digital tools in schools. Recognizing a global shift where some educational systems are pivoting away from heavy device reliance in favor of traditional methods like pen and paper, Aisha Miran, the Director-General of the KHDA, emphasized that the goal is not to force a blanket tech policy. Instead, the authority aims to empower educators to use technology only when it demonstrably enhances the learning experience, striking a balance between digital innovation and proven instructional techniques.
Rather than imposing strict bans on devices like mobile phones, the KHDA is focusing on fostering accountability and sound judgment within school leadership. Miran noted that while there have been calls to restrict devices entirely, the authority prefers to give schools the flexibility to manage their own environments. The ultimate objective is to prepare students for a tech-driven world by teaching them how to use digital tools responsibly. By helping students discern when technology is beneficial and when it is a distraction, the KHDA hopes to cultivate well-rounded individuals who can navigate the digital landscape with maturity and ethical awareness.
