Abu Dhabi’s New Mid-Island Parkway Set to Slash Commute Times
Abu Dhabi’s ambitious infrastructure landscape is set for a major transformation as the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) moves forward with the Mid-Island Parkway. The first phase of this massive project, expected to be finished by 2027, will drastically improve connectivity by reducing the commute between Saadiyat Island and Reem Island from 25 minutes down to just 10. Beyond mere travel efficiency, the project emphasizes sustainable urban planning, featuring smart energy-efficient lighting, recycled construction materials, and the expansion of cycling and pedestrian paths that create a continuous 12-kilometre active travel corridor.
The engineering behind this endeavor is equally impressive, utilizing precast concrete techniques to expedite construction through both underground channels and underwater segments. Looking ahead, the second phase will extend the parkway to reach key hubs like Al Raha Beach and Khalifa City, further optimizing travel times to seven minutes. Furthermore, the DMT has unveiled plans for a broader 37-kilometre coastal expressway designed to bridge the gap between Al Dhafra and Abu Dhabi Island. By integrating marine bridges and tunnels that prioritize the preservation of sensitive ecosystems like mangroves and salt marshes, these projects aim to link the emirate’s distant points—from Saadiyat Island to Zayed City—in less than 15 minutes, ultimately boosting trade, tourism, and overall quality of life.
