UAE and Jordan Kick Off Landmark $2.5 Billion Railway Project
King Abdullah II of Jordan and Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, recently inaugurated the groundbreaking for the ambitious AqabaâAl-ShidiyehâMaan Railway Project. Backed by a $2.5 billion joint investment, this 403-kilometer network marks a major milestone in the strategic partnership between the two nations. The project aims to modernize Jordan's logistics infrastructure by linking critical mining and production sites to the ports of Aqaba, significantly reducing road traffic congestion while creating a more sustainable and efficient freight transport system.
Beyond its logistical advantages, the railway is set to be a major economic engine for southern Jordan, with plans to transport 16 million tonnes of phosphate and potash annually. The initiative is expected to generate roughly 5,000 jobs and slash transportation costs by $40 million each year, bolstering the global competitiveness of Jordanâs mining sector. By incorporating extensive engineering featsâincluding 55 bridges and six tunnelsâthe Jordan-UAE Railway Company is building a robust foundation for regional trade, opening new doors for private sector involvement in construction, technology, and maintenance while fueling long-term economic prosperity for both countries.
