UAE Official Urges Independent AI Safety Oversight Amid Global Race
Faisal Al Bannai, a key adviser to the UAE President, recently emphasized that the global AI arms race shows no signs of slowing, making it imperative for nations to develop independent systems for evaluating advanced models. Speaking at the AI Everything summit in Abu Dhabi, Al Bannai argued that the entities creating these powerful technologies should not be the sole arbiters of their safety. Instead, he advocates for a framework of independent testing, evolving benchmarks, and risk-based regulations, particularly as AI begins to influence critical infrastructure like healthcare and traffic management, where the stakes for human safety are significantly higher.
Central to his vision is the concept of "sovereign AI," which Al Bannai defines as more than just owning intellectual property; it requires the technical capacity to understand, modify, and control AI systems. He warns that relying on "black box" models from other developers leaves nations vulnerable, as they lack the ability to predict or manage edge cases within the code. To address this, the UAE is pursuing a balanced strategyâintegrating top-tier global models while simultaneously building open-source alternatives and specialized, smaller-scale models designed for specific enterprise tasks. By prioritizing agility and proactive regulation over waiting for perfect governance, Al Bannai believes the UAE can effectively navigate the rapid, unavoidable evolution of artificial intelligence.
