Dubai’s Housing Standards: Essential Rules for Shared Accommodation
Dubai Municipality has established clear guidelines for shared living arrangements to ensure health, safety, and adequate space for all residents. For those living in shared units, the regulations mandate a minimum of five square metres of bedroom space per person, which is just enough to accommodate a single bed and a desk. When families share a residential unit, each family is required to have their own bedroom equipped with a private, internal bathroom. For individual-focused housing, multiple people may share a room within established occupancy limits, and living rooms can occasionally be converted into sleeping quarters provided they meet all technical and health standards.
Kitchen and bathroom requirements are equally specific to maintain sanitary living conditions. Every resident must be accounted for with at least one square metre of kitchen space, with communal kitchens allowed in new buildings as long as they are properly equipped. Bathroom access is strictly regulated: one full bathroom must be available for every four people. If shower and toilet facilities are separated, the rules require one toilet for every four occupants and one shower for every six residents. Additionally, buildings designated for individuals must include dedicated laundry facilities, as well as multipurpose halls for dining and recreation, ensuring that shared living environments remain functional and comfortable for everyone involved.
