The AI-Water-Energy Nexus: UAE Report Highlights Hidden Resource Demands
Ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference, which the UAE will co-host in Abu Dhabi, the nation has unveiled a critical report titled "Crosscurrents: Navigating the AI–Water–Energy Nexus." The document sheds light on the often-overlooked environmental footprint of artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on the massive consumption of water and energy required to sustain the industry’s rapid expansion. By examining the entire AI value chain, the report highlights the urgent need to integrate water security into the core planning of future technological infrastructure.
Released during the 81st UN General Assembly, the report serves as a follow-up to the UAE’s previous research on global water scarcity. It offers five key recommendations for policymakers, most notably urging the international community to establish a global consensus on responsible water consumption within the tech sector. Ultimately, the UAE aims to shift the narrative from seeing AI purely as a resource burden to recognizing its potential as a sophisticated tool that can, if managed correctly, help optimize water management and solve complex environmental challenges.
