Abu Dhabi’s Ambitious Drive for 30,000-Tonne Sustainable Seafood Production
Abu Dhabi is set to significantly bolster its food security through a strategic partnership between QITAF Holding and Japan’s Global Academy Limited. The two entities have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a massive, land-based aquaculture facility designed to produce 30,000 metric tonnes of seafood annually. By utilizing advanced modular Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, the project aims to minimize water waste while cultivating high-demand species such as hamour, cobia, sea bass, and shrimp. This initiative is a critical step in reducing the nation's reliance on imports and establishing the emirate as a self-sustaining hub for premium seafood.
Beyond simple fish farming, the project is envisioned as a comprehensive ecosystem that includes hatcheries, processing plants, and sophisticated cold-chain logistics. A standout feature of this collaboration is the integration of cutting-edge Japanese technology, including AI-driven monitoring and IoT-enabled water quality controls, which will ensure high production standards and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the partnership prioritizes the development of local talent, focusing on training a specialized workforce in biosecurity and aquaculture management. As the project moves from technical assessment to commercial development, it stands as a cornerstone of the UAE’s broader strategy to enhance domestic food production and build resilient, long-term supply chains.
