Abu Dhabi’s New Outdoor Seating Guidelines for Businesses
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has launched a new initiative to ensure that outdoor seating areas at local restaurants, cafés, and retail shops align with urban aesthetic and safety standards. Business owners are strictly required to secure official permits before setting up any outdoor furniture on pavements. These regulations are designed to enhance the city's overall appeal while prioritizing pedestrian access. Key requirements include keeping a minimum one-metre clear path for walkers, ensuring seating does not extend beyond the shop’s frontage, and incorporating designated walkways for setups exceeding 12 metres in length.
Compliance also involves maintaining specific safety clearances from city infrastructure to protect both pedestrians and public facilities. Outdoor seating must be set back at least eight metres from residential entrances, three metres from utility rooms, and two metres from bus stops and emergency zones. Furthermore, items like road signs, fire hydrants, and lighting poles require a one-metre buffer. The municipality also provided guidelines for aesthetics, noting that seating areas should remain open-air, with barriers and planters kept tidy and parasols secured or removed during high winds. Business owners are encouraged to reach out to the municipality at 800 555 for any permit-related inquiries to ensure their establishments meet these communal standards.
