Sharjah Celebrates Marine Heritage at the Sir Bu Nair Festival
Al Heera Beach has transformed into a vibrant hub of maritime culture with the launch of the Sir Bu Nair Festival, which runs through October 18. This free public event offers a unique window into the conservation efforts and history of the remote Sir Bu Nair Island. Visitors can explore an immersive exhibition featuring photography and coral displays, or enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities, including marine-themed workshops for children, live stage performances, and local vendor stalls. Whether you are looking to learn about the island’s rich biodiversity—including its 40 coral species and turtle nesting sites—or simply enjoy an evening by the sea, there is something for everyone to discover between the late afternoon and evening hours.
The highlight of the festival is the adrenaline-fueled 60-foot Dhow Sailing Race taking place on October 10. More than 70 dhows and over 1,000 sailors are set to navigate a challenging 25-nautical-mile course from Al Hamriyah to Al Heera, competing for a generous Dh3 million prize pool. In addition to this traditional sailing spectacle, the event features the Sir Bu Nair Challenge, a rigorous obstacle-course competition designed for Sharjah government employees. By blending professional athletic contests with educational exhibits and community-focused entertainment, the festival successfully bridges the gap between the UAE’s storied seafaring past and the modern-day importance of marine environmental protection.
