UAE Launches Nationwide Safety Crackdown Following Narrow Escape in Fujairah
Following a harrowing near-tragedy in Fujairah, where a seven-year-old boy and his domestic worker fell into a poorly covered private well, UAE authorities have initiated an aggressive, country-wide campaign to secure all abandoned and exposed shafts. The incident, which occurred when a makeshift wooden cover collapsed, saw the heroic housemaid hold the child above water until rescue teams arrived. While both survived, the incident has served as a grim wake-up call, prompting police, Civil Defence, and municipal teams to launch intensive inspections across residential, agricultural, and desert regions to prevent further accidents.
Officials are now mandating that property owners immediately reinforce well openings with heavy-duty materials, such as concrete or welded steel, and install secure perimeter fencing. Municipalities, including those in Al Dhaid and Al Ain, have already begun deploying heavy machinery to backfill dangerous pits and seal unused shafts that pose a threat to children and livestock. Authorities are urging the public to exercise constant vigilance and report any suspicious or uncovered wells, emphasizing that negligence in securing these hazards will not be tolerated and that community cooperation is essential to eliminating these life-threatening risks.
