Dubai Explores Driverless Pods to Bridge the First and Last-Mile Transport Gap
Dubai is moving forward with an ambitious plan to revolutionize urban mobility by integrating driverless, AI-powered electric pods into its existing public transport infrastructure. Known as the Glydways project, this initiative aims to solve the persistent "first and last-mile" challenge, which often discourages residents from using the Metro. By utilizing dedicated, compact guideways that can be elevated or placed at ground level, these autonomous pods will offer direct, on-demand travel from Metro stations to key residential and commercial hubs, including Bluewaters, Jumeirah Village Circle, and Business Bay, without the need for traditional taxis or private vehicles.
Currently, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is conducting a trial at Bluewaters to evaluate the system’s safety and seamless integration into the city's transit network. Beyond connecting to the Metro, the vision includes transforming public parking facilities into mobility hubs through a partnership with Parkin. This would allow commuters to transition effortlessly from their cars to autonomous pods via a unified digital platform. If these initial trials prove successful, the RTA hopes to roll out this efficient, point-to-point transit solution across more of the city within the next few years, significantly easing congestion in Dubai’s busiest urban districts.
