Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Energy Expansion to Fuel AI and Industrial Growth
Abu Dhabi has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest Dh250 billion into its energy and water infrastructure over the next decade. As the emirate rapidly expands its industrial and AI sectors, the Department of Energy is prioritizing a robust power grid that can support the massive electricity needs of modern data centers. According to Undersecretary Eng. Ahmed Al Rumaithi, the initial phase of AI infrastructure will require two gigawatts of power, a figure projected to climb to five gigawatts as technology demands evolve. This investment is not just about capacity; it is deeply tied to the emirate's sustainability goals, with a firm target to source 60 percent of electricity from clean energy.
Beyond capacity upgrades, Abu Dhabi is empowering local businesses through its Clean Energy Certificates scheme, allowing companies to verify their green energy usage and boost their global competitiveness. This infrastructure push complements the broader economic momentum seen in hubs like KEZAD, which currently contributes over Dh158 billion to the non-oil economy. By aligning large-scale industrial growth with reliable, sustainable energy solutions, the emirate is positioning itself as a primary destination for global investors. Ultimately, this long-term planning ensures that the infrastructure serves as a catalyst for economic development rather than a bottleneck, securing Abu Dhabi’s status as a leader in the global industrial landscape.
