GCC Hits Milestone with Universal Health Coverage for Youth
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reached a significant public health milestone, achieving 100 percent coverage of basic medical services for adolescents and young adults. According to recent data from the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-STAT), this achievement places the region well ahead of the global average of 68 percent. As of 2025, the region is home to approximately 12.8 million individuals between the ages of 10 and 24, a demographic that makes up one-fifth of the total GCC population.
Beyond service delivery, the region has also demonstrated perfect compliance with national regulations governing youth health, significantly outperforming the international standard of 84 percent. This success is rooted in a dual-focus strategy that emphasizes both the availability of high-quality care and the implementation of robust protective policies. By marking Gulf Adolescent and Youth Health Day every September 30, the GCC underscores its ongoing commitment to prioritizing preventive care, public health awareness, and the continued development of medical services specifically designed to meet the evolving needs of its younger generation.
