Dubai’s Infrastructure Expansion: A Vision for Future Mobility
With over 11 million daily trips taking place across the city, Dubai’s transport infrastructure has reached a scale so massive that its road network would stretch halfway across the planet if laid end to end. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted that as the city’s population is expected to double by 2040, the focus must shift toward proactive planning. Reflecting on the RTA’s origins, which began in 2005 to combat the gridlock and inefficiency of rapid urban growth, Al Tayer noted that the authority has since generated over Dh319 billion in savings through enhanced fuel efficiency and time management.
Looking ahead, the RTA is moving toward a three-dimensional transport vision that integrates sky, ground, and underground networks. This ambitious roadmap includes the development of autonomous taxis, which have already logged millions of kilometers, alongside the advancement of air taxi services and the construction of the future Metro Gold Line. Furthermore, by leveraging AI to streamline operations and exploring underground systems for goods and services, Dubai aims to maintain its momentum as a global hub, ensuring that its infrastructure remains resilient and capable of supporting millions of residents in the decades to come.
