Sharjah Man Sentenced to Prison for Million-Dirham Education Fraud
A Sharjah court has sentenced a man to six months in prison following a sophisticated scam that swindled a father out of over Dh1.5 million. The perpetrator allegedly gained the victim's trust by falsely claiming he had the high-level influence necessary to secure a spot for the manâs son at a local college. By operating under a fake identity and demanding cash payments in private settingsâsuch as shopping malls and his own carâthe fraudster successfully avoided leaving a digital trail, eventually extracting Dh1.515 million under the guise of tuition fees and "investment" opportunities.
The deception began to unravel when the promised admission never materialized and the defendant refused to return the funds. Legal representatives for the victim presented compelling evidence to the court, including witness testimony from a mutual acquaintance who confirmed the defendant had admitted to taking the money. After reviewing the case, the judge ruled that the defendant had used calculated fraudulent tactics to deceive the victim. In addition to the six-month jail term, the court has referred the case to civil authorities to handle the financial restitution process.
