Behind the Scenes: Why the UAE Took a Measured Approach to the Flydubai FZ1073 Incident

Fri, Oct 16, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Following the incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, UAE officials have shed light on why they chose to delay public statements, emphasizing that accuracy was far more important than speed. During a recent discussion at the UAE Correspondents' Majlis, Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Authority, explained that the surge of unverified reports and speculative naming of individuals forced authorities to proceed with extreme caution. Because any official statement carries significant weight, the government refused to release details until they were 100 percent certain, aiming to prevent the spread of misinformation that often accompanies such high-profile events.

The situation was further complicated by the complex logistics of the incident, which spanned multiple jurisdictions. Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the FNC’s Defence, Interior and Foreign Affairs Committee, noted that because the flight involved an Emirati airline, a forced landing in Saudi Arabia, and predominantly Israeli passengers, the UAE had to prioritize passenger safety and international coordination over immediate media briefings. Authorities had to dispatch teams to Saudi Arabia to conduct a thorough, on-the-ground investigation, all while respecting Saudi sovereignty. Ultimately, officials highlighted that the rush for news often leads to falsified evidence—such as viral videos depicting the plane over the ocean when it was actually over land—reinforcing why the state chose to verify every detail before sharing it with the public.
