UAE Warns Against Online Defamation with Stiff Penalties
As part of the nationwide "The UAE is safe with your digital awareness" campaign, authorities have issued a stern reminder regarding the legal consequences of online misconduct. During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Ministry of Interior, in partnership with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre, emphasized that individuals who use social media to insult or defame others could face severe repercussions. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021, offenders found guilty of spreading content that targets others with contempt or potential punishment risk jail time and hefty fines ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000. These penalties become even more stringent if the victim is a public official.
Beyond the legal implications, the initiative encourages residents to view social media as a space for positive engagement rather than hostility. The campaign serves as a broader effort to boost digital literacy, urging the public to use technology responsibly and steer clear of cybercrimes or AI misuse. By fostering a culture of respectful dialogue, the government aims to ensure that the UAE’s digital landscape remains aligned with the country’s core values of safety and mutual respect for all members of society.
