Decoding the Digital Dialect: A Guide for UAE Parents
In today’s hyper-connected world, the online lexicon used by children is shifting at a rapid pace, often leaving parents confused by unfamiliar abbreviations, emojis, and viral trends. The UAE’s Child Safety Organisation is highlighting that what might seem like harmless internet banter—such as specific slang terms—can sometimes mask underlying issues like cyberbullying, inappropriate content, or unwanted contact from strangers. With 97 per cent of children in the UAE aged seven and up using digital devices, authorities are stressing that parental involvement is no longer just about tracking screen time; it is about genuinely understanding the digital environment where children socialize and express themselves.
To bridge this gap, experts encourage parents to maintain an open, non-judgmental dialogue with their children. Rather than jumping to conclusions when encountering an strange acronym, parents are advised to ask their children about the context, which fosters a climate of trust and transparency. Dr. Hanadi Saleh Al Yafei, Director General of the Child Safety Organisation, emphasizes that true protection stems from comprehension rather than simple surveillance. By staying curious about the platforms their children frequent and keeping the conversation about digital safety ongoing, parents can better distinguish between playful trends and potential warning signs, ensuring their children are equipped to navigate the online world safely.
