Dubai Enhances Public Transport Accessibility for People of Determination
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a suite of innovative initiatives aimed at making the city’s public transit network more inclusive for People of Determination. Recently highlighted at the AccessAbilities Expo, these upgrades include the installation of sensory rooms to provide a calm environment for individuals with autism, as well as mental maps designed to assist those with visual impairments in navigating metro and bus stations. To further support independence, the RTA has integrated voice-enabled journey planning into its S’hail app, allowing users to easily coordinate trips across various transit modes while identifying where additional assistance might be required.
Beyond digital and sensory support, the RTA is taking a firmer stance on protecting infrastructure access through smart parking monitoring. Currently, 250 of Dubai’s 1,800 dedicated parking spots for People of Determination are equipped with sensors to prevent unauthorized use, ensuring these vital spaces remain available for those who truly need them. Additionally, the authority has rolled out emergency wheelchair services throughout its facilities, providing a vital safety net for passengers who may experience equipment failure or fatigue during their travels. By combining smart technology with thoughtful physical infrastructure, these efforts represent a significant step toward a more seamless and dignified travel experience for all residents.
