Abu Dhabi’s Genomic Revolution: Saving Lives Through Early Detection
Abu Dhabi’s groundbreaking newborn genomic screening program has officially reached a major milestone, providing life-altering interventions for over 100 infants in just one year. During the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, Department of Health Chairman Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori highlighted the program's success by sharing the story of baby Sarah. By identifying a gene mutation linked to eye cancer at birth—well before any physical symptoms manifested—medical professionals were able to intervene early, successfully preserving her vision and ensuring a healthy future.
This initiative, which screens for over 800 childhood conditions, stands as one of the most advanced public health efforts in the world. As part of a larger strategy to transition from reactive treatment to preventative care, the program utilizes AI to interpret genetic signals that were once invisible to clinicians. Emphasizing the need for global collaboration, Al Mansoori urged policymakers and industry leaders to help close the gap between scientific innovation and clinical delivery, noting that the advancements currently being pioneered in Abu Dhabi have the potential to protect children across the globe.
