UAE Emerges as Global Hub for Life-Saving Gene Therapy
Abu Dhabi has solidified its position as a world-class destination for advanced medical care, successfully treating over 370 international patients with cutting-edge gene therapies between 2020 and 2026. Data revealed at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit shows that the value of these treatments for global patients has reached an estimated Dh3.3 billion. Through collaborations with major pharmaceutical partners, the UAE is now providing life-altering interventions for complex conditions such as sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and various forms of muscular dystrophy, effectively reversing the historical trend of patients having to travel abroad for hope.
At the heart of this medical transformation is a sophisticated CRISPR gene-editing program that repairs a patient’s own stem cells to treat inherited blood disorders. Dr. Fatima Alkabi, who oversees the program, emphasized that this is a complex, multi-stage clinical journey rather than a simple procedure, supported by a robust healthcare ecosystem. Recent results have been highly encouraging; patients ranging from 12 to 43 years old have achieved stable blood cell production without the need for further transfusions. As the Emirati Genome Programme continues to expand its reach with nearly one million genetic samples collected, the UAE is moving beyond merely adopting innovation to actively setting global standards for the future of personalized medicine.
