UAE Unveils Major Plans for E-911 Highway to Ease Inter-Emirate Traffic
The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has officially moved forward with plans for a massive new infrastructure project, the E-911 highway, which aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion between the northern emirates and Dubai. This 68km federal corridor is designed to stretch from the Dubai-Sharjah border to Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Shuhada Road, featuring an impressive 12 to 16 lanes. The project, estimated to cost Dh6 billion, will also include an 8km link to the existing Emirates Road (E-611) and is expected to accommodate up to 360,000 trips daily, significantly boosting the country's transportation capacity.
This initiative comes as a direct response to persistent concerns regarding the heavy traffic flow between Dubai and the Northern Emirates, an issue frequently debated at the Federal National Council. With some commuters spending hundreds of hours annually stuck in traffic, officials have prioritized this expansion as part of a broader Dh170-billion investment program aimed at increasing the efficiency of the national road network by 73 percent by 2030. Beyond the highway, the government is also exploring improved public transit solutions, including Bus Rapid Transit routes, to provide residents with more reliable and efficient alternatives to private vehicle travel.
