Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) Achieves 50% Restoration at Al Taweelah Smelter
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has successfully brought 50 per cent of the reduction cells back online at its Al Taweelah facility in Abu Dhabi following the devastating Iranian attack on March 28. The site, which was forced into an emergency shutdown and total evacuation earlier this year amid the ongoing regional conflict, is seeing steady progress as teams work around the clock to restart the plant's three potlines. As of October 21, 631 out of the 1,262 total cells are operational, and the company remains confident in reaching full production capacity by the first quarter of 2027.
The path to recovery has been an unprecedented industrial undertaking, as the emergency shutdown caused molten aluminium to solidify within the cells, necessitating a massive effort to remove heavy metal pads and perform complex repairs. To accelerate the timeline, EGA has tripled its repair capacity by optimizing workflows and integrating new industrial technologies. CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban praised the resilience of the workforce, noting that this recovery effort is the company's greatest challenge to date. While the incident caused significant damage and several injuries, the integration of new E40 technology during the rebuilding process offers a silver lining, with the potential to significantly boost future production yields once the facility is fully back online.
