UAE’s First Female Paramedic Recalls Surprise Royal Visit After Al Quoz Fire
Jameela Al Zaabi, the UAE’s pioneering female paramedic and former director of the Dubai Police women’s prison, recently shared a life-changing memory on the Arab Cast podcast. In 2008, following a grueling 17-hour shift battling a massive warehouse fire in Al Quoz, Al Zaabi returned home exhausted. Expecting an inspection committee, she was stunned when she opened her door to find Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, standing on her doorstep. He had come personally to recognize her extraordinary dedication, leaving her with words of appreciation that she still cherishes today: “We are proud of you.”
The encounter followed a harrowing day that began when Al Zaabi abandoned plans to attend a graduation ceremony to rush to the Al Quoz blaze. Despite the extreme danger, her primary concern remained the welfare of the injured and her fellow responders, leading her to work tirelessly until the next morning. Her bravery was not only noted by the press but was also officially honored by the Ruler, who ordered her promotion and bestowed upon her the title of "Mother of Ambulance." For Al Zaabi, this unexpected visit transformed her exhaustion into immense pride, serving as a powerful reminder that her commitment to duty had been deeply seen and valued by the nation’s leadership.
