Groundbreaking Heart Stem Cell Trial to Launch in Abu Dhabi

Wed, Oct 21, 2026(1h ago)UAE

A revolutionary heart treatment that has already defied medical expectations is set to enter a new, pivotal phase in Abu Dhabi. Approximately eight years ago, ten patients diagnosed with terminal heart failure—each given a prognosis of just six months to two years—received experimental stem cell injections. Remarkably, most of these individuals are still alive today, thanks to a therapy that uses mesenchymal stem cells to "reawaken" dormant heart muscle. Nobel laureate Sir Martin Evans, the visionary behind this treatment, selected Abu Dhabi for the next stage of development, citing the local health authority’s uniquely supportive and forward-thinking regulatory environment.

The therapy, branded as CLXR-001, functions by delivering biochemical signals to damaged heart tissue, encouraging hibernating muscle cells to regain their function rather than remaining as non-beating scar tissue. Following promising results from European Phase IIa trials, which showed tangible improvements in heart function and patient quality of life, the upcoming Abu Dhabi study will be a more rigorous, double-blind trial. While Sir Martin views this as an early step in a much larger journey, a successful outcome could position the UAE as the first region to approve a therapy that holds the potential to help millions of heart failure patients worldwide.
