UAE’s Lana Nusseibeh Launches Campaign for UN Secretary-General
Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Minister of State and former long-term representative to the United Nations, has officially announced her candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General. Stepping away from her government duties to pursue the role, Nusseibeh aims to succeed António Guterres when his term concludes at the end of 2026. Emphasizing her extensive diplomatic background, she argues that the UN must evolve to prioritize urgent, concrete action over rhetoric to restore global trust. Her platform, titled "A United Nations for the Next Eighty Years," centers on proactive conflict resolution and a robust reform of the organization’s operational structure.
Nusseibeh’s vision for the UN focuses on three core pillars: revitalized peace and security efforts, modernized development strategies, and the consistent application of human rights. She advocates for “quiet diplomacy” and practical, incremental agreements—such as prisoner exchanges or humanitarian access—to de-escalate conflicts before they widen. Internally, she proposes a leaner, more accountable Secretariat that pushes resources and leadership closer to the front lines. Furthermore, she aims to reshape the UN's development approach by prioritizing job creation and private-sector partnerships, while addressing emerging global challenges like artificial intelligence and climate change through collaborative, non-partisan governance.
