Stargazing in Al Quaa: A Guide to Experiencing the Milky Way in the UAE

Sun, May 31, 2026(3h ago)UAE

The Al Quaa desert in Abu Dhabi has become a prime destination for astronomy enthusiasts looking to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. Running from late March through September, this season offers the perfect opportunity to view the galaxy's core, typically best observed between 9 pm and 3 am. To find it, experts suggest using apps like Stellarium to locate the Sagittarius and Scorpius constellations; once you spot the "teapot" shape of Sagittarius, look for the faint, cloudy band stretching upward, which becomes more prominent as the night progresses.

Planning a trip to this dark-sky sanctuary requires careful preparation, as the site is remote and lacks nearby facilities. It is essential to download offline maps, as mobile signals often drop once you enter the desert, and to ensure you have enough fuel before heading out. Visitors should drive cautiously, stay on the paved paths to avoid getting stuck in sand, and keep safety in mind by wearing closed-toe shoes to protect against local wildlife. Because there are no restrooms or shops for nearly 45 minutes, packing water, snacks, and warm clothing is highly recommended. To ensure the best experience and preserve the site’s dark conditions, try to visit during a new moon, avoid using bright lights or flash photography, and be sure to take all your trash with you when you leave.
