UAE Doctors Issue Urgent Road Safety Warning for Diabetic Drivers

Sun, May 31, 2026(3h ago)UAE

Medical professionals in the UAE are sounding the alarm for diabetic motorists, urging them to pull over immediately if they experience signs of hypoglycemia. Because the brain relies heavily on glucose for fuel, even a slight dip in blood sugar can impair cognitive functions—such as reaction time, judgment, and focus—long before a driver realizes they are in trouble. Local authorities, including the Abu Dhabi Police, emphasize that these physiological shifts are a significant road safety risk, as they can lead to erratic behaviors like drifting between lanes, improper braking, or failing to acknowledge traffic signals.

To prevent dangerous incidents, doctors recommend that diabetics make blood sugar checks a mandatory part of their pre-drive routine, aiming for a minimum level of 90 mg/dl before turning the ignition. It is essential to avoid driving on an empty stomach and to keep fast-acting snacks, such as glucose tablets or juice, within easy reach inside the vehicle. If symptoms like tremors, blurred vision, or light-headedness surface during a trip, drivers should move to a safe spot, turn off the engine, and stabilize their levels before considering getting back on the road. Carrying medical identification and staying hydrated are also vital steps in ensuring a safe journey for those managing diabetes.
