A Tragic Silence: Mumbai Train Stabbing Sparks Outrage Over Bystander Apathy

Thu, Jun 25, 2026(2h ago)World

The family of 20-year-old Mayank Lohar is reeling in shock after their son was fatally stabbed during a dispute on a Mumbai local train this past Tuesday. The altercation began late at night when the victim requested that the train doors be closed to keep out driving rain, a move opposed by the assailant, 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna. According to reports, an intoxicated Suvarna pulled a knife during the argument and attacked Lohar, delivering fatal wounds to his chest and stomach before fleeing the scene at Borivali station.

Beyond the sheer brutality of the crime, the victim's father, Ramesh Lohar, expressed deep heartbreak over the conduct of the roughly 50 other passengers present in the compartment. Rather than intervening or subduing the attacker, many onlookers reportedly chose to film the gruesome assault on their phones. "Had the other travellers got together and overpowered the accused, he could have been caught on the spot," the grieving father lamented. While local authorities were eventually able to track down and arrest Suvarna near Panvel by analyzing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and identifying his employer through his clothing, the incident has left a community questioning the decline of civic courage in the face of tragedy.
