A Mother’s Desperate Search Following Venezuela’s Devastating Quake

Fri, Jun 26, 2026(3h ago)World

In the wake of Venezuela’s most powerful earthquake since 1900, heartbreaking scenes of desperation have emerged, most notably that of Amparo del Giudice. Faced with the absence of government rescue teams following the back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors, she began frantically clearing heavy concrete with her bare hands, hoping to reach her son buried beneath the wreckage. Her grandson, Alessandro, joined the harrowing effort, clinging to the hope that his father remained alive amidst the ruins of what was once a bustling community in La Guaira.

The coastal region, once a vibrant Caribbean getaway for residents of Caracas, has been left in ruins, with the official death toll climbing past 200 and thousands left injured. As luxury condos and five-star hotels have crumbled into piles of twisted metal and glass, the atmosphere in the disaster zone has turned chaotic, with reports of looting and survivors left to navigate the debris alone. With constant aftershocks threatening the stability of the remaining structures, volunteers continue to call out for the missing, searching through the dust and rubble of a town that has been fundamentally broken by nature’s fury.
