UN Estimates Millions Impacted by Catastrophic Venezuela Earthquakes

Sun, Jun 28, 2026(45d ago)World

The United Nations has issued a sobering assessment revealing that nearly 6.8 million people may have been affected by the powerful twin earthquakes that recently devastated Venezuela. Following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors on June 24th, the national death toll has already climbed to 920, with over 50,000 individuals still reported missing. Satellite analysis conducted by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab highlights the severity of the damage, particularly in areas like Catia La Mar, where nearly a third of all structures have been compromised.

In response to the crisis, the IOM is rapidly mobilizing emergency relief efforts to assist the millions left vulnerable by the disaster. With critical infrastructure destroyed and thousands trapped under rubble, the agency is prioritizing the delivery of shelter, clean water, and medical supplies to the hardest-hit communities. As the nation faces this immense humanitarian challenge, the UN is urgently calling on the international community to provide support, noting that immediate aid is essential to stabilize the situation and begin the difficult process of recovery for those who have lost everything.
