Europe’s Record-Breaking Heatwave: Infrastructure Struggles and Rising Tolls

Mon, Jun 29, 2026(3h ago)World

Europe is currently grappling with a severe and historic heatwave, as temperatures soared past 40°C, causing widespread chaos across the continent. World Health Organization officials have sounded the alarm, noting that 150 million people are facing extreme conditions that have led to significant loss of life, school closures, and strained power grids. Experts emphasize that this blistering weather, which began in late June, would have been nearly impossible without the influence of human-caused climate change, noting that such intense night-time temperatures are now 100 times more likely to occur than they were twenty years ago.

The physical toll on infrastructure has been equally alarming, with reports of road surfaces buckling in Germany and traffic lights literally melting in parts of Italy. Transport networks have been severely disrupted, leading to the suspension of tram services and restricted rail travel, while police in Berlin resorted to using water cannons to help citizens find relief. Meanwhile, public health agencies are reporting a spike in fatalities—particularly among the elderly—and major events, such as the Garorock music festival in France, have been forced to cancel, underscoring the profound social and economic disruption caused by this relentless heat.
