UN Secretary-General Calls for Global AI Oversight

Mon, Jul 6, 2026(45d ago)World

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a stark warning regarding the rapid, unregulated expansion of artificial intelligence, describing the current landscape as a risky experiment on society. During the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, Guterres emphasized that existing institutional frameworks are ill-equipped to manage technologies that operate with increasing autonomy. He cautioned that we are transitioning from a world where machines follow human instructions to one where they make independent decisions, warning that humanity must proactively govern these systems rather than allowing "vibe-coding" and algorithmic trends to dictate our future.

Guterres highlighted several critical dangers, including the concentration of AI power within a few nations and corporations, the erosion of truth, and the alarming development of lethal autonomous weapons, which he bluntly labeled "killer robots." To combat these threats, he called for international standards that prioritize human rights, child safety, and environmental accountability. He specifically advocated for a Global Fund for AI to bridge the digital divide between developed and developing nations, urging the world to act quickly to establish guardrails before the opportunity to define the human-machine relationship slips away.
