A Heartwarming Reunion: Kerala Man Travels Across States to Repay a 35-Year-Old Debt

Mon, Jul 13, 2026(4h ago)World

For over three decades, Muhammad Ismail from Kerala carried a heavy sense of responsibility regarding a small favor from his past. In 1991, while working in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia, he had borrowed 120 Saudi Riyals from his roommate, Edla Lachanna. Before the loan could be repaid, Lachanna returned home to India, and the two friends lost touch in an era before digital connectivity. Ismail never forgot the kindness shown to him, and recently, he leveraged Google to track down his long-lost friend, eventually discovering that Lachanna had settled in the town of Dharmapuri, Telangana.

Determined to settle his debt, Ismail traveled from Kerala to Telangana, eventually locating Lachanna’s home to the immense surprise of his family. Ismail insisted on repaying the original loan with interest, providing 25,000 rupees—a gesture that left the family deeply moved by his integrity. Though Lachanna had long forgotten the small financial favor, he was overjoyed to reconnect with his old friend through a video call. The two men reflected on their time spent cooking and dining together in Saudi Arabia, proving that their bond was defined far more by their enduring friendship than by the currency exchanged years ago.
