Jordan Clarifies Status of Aqaba Facilities Amid Security Concerns

Mon, Jul 20, 2026(17h ago)World

The Jordanian government has officially refuted claims that its airport and seaport in Aqaba were evacuated due to security threats. Government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani clarified that no such orders were issued by local authorities, emphasizing that both facilities have remained fully operational. This statement was released in response to an alert from the U.S. Embassy in Amman, which had previously warned of a “specific and credible threat” and urged American citizens to avoid the area.

Al-Momani further asserted that Jordanian security agencies have detected no abnormal activity or credible dangers in the region over the past few hours, directly contradicting the U.S. warning. The confusion follows a period of heightened regional tension, marked by recent reports of two U.S. military personnel deaths linked to Iranian-backed attacks and ongoing concerns regarding Iranian missiles crossing Jordanian airspace. Despite these broader geopolitical pressures, the Jordanian government maintains that its critical infrastructure remains secure and functional.
